The name Serendip hails from an old Arabic word for Sri Lanka, once known as Serendib—a name born of Sanskrit roots, meaning “Lion Island” or “Golden Island.” It was from this word, and the Persian tale The Three Princes of Serendip, that the English language gained the notion of serendipity: the art of finding treasures by chance.
